Laying weed control fabric: Step-by-step instructions for a weed-free garden

It's often said that "weeds never die," but that doesn't mean gardeners have to put up with them. Many gardening enthusiasts know the tedious battle with a hoe to remove pesky weeds from their flowerbeds. But there's an easier way to lighten the load and enjoy more time in the garden – by laying weed control fabric. In this guide, you'll learn why weed control fabric is a good choice, how it works, and how to lay it correctly. Happy reading!

Why should I use weed control fabric? What it is and how it helps in the garden

There are many methods for controlling weeds: you can remove them by hand, which is very time-consuming for large areas, or you can use chemical agents, which often have negative environmental impacts. An environmentally friendly alternative is weed control fabric. It prevents weed growth by depriving the unwanted plants of light.

Weed control fabric is an opaque but breathable film that allows water and air to pass through easily. This allows rainwater to penetrate the soil and maintains air circulation. The fabric is laid directly on the soil of the beds, with small crosses cut out for the plants. The result: weeds are prevented from growing, while your desired plants can continue to thrive undisturbed.

Possible uses of weed control fabric

Ornamental flower beds – beautiful and weed-free. If you want to create colorful ornamental areas in your garden without the hassle of weeds, weed control fabric is the perfect solution. The fabric is laid across the entire bed and can then be covered with mulch, for example. High-quality weed control fabric is durable and can be used for several years. When covered, it blends seamlessly into your garden's overall appearance.

Vegetable beds – bountiful harvests without chemicals. Weed control fabric is not only suitable for flower beds, but also ideal for vegetable and strawberry beds. It serves as preventative protection against weeds and helps retain heat in the soil for longer, promoting plant growth – similar to horticultural fleece.

Things to consider when buying weed control fabric:

  • Material thickness: The thickness of the fleece determines its durability. For short-term applications, a fleece with a thickness of 50 g/m² is sufficient. For permanently covered beds, for example under mulch, fleeces with 80 to 100 g/m² are recommended. Stone and gravel beds require particularly durable fleeces with 150 to 180 g/m².

Instructions for laying weed control fabric

  1. Prepare the soil: Remove all unwanted plants, roots, and stones. Loosen the soil and improve it if necessary.
  2. Laying the fleece: Lay the weed control fleece smoothly on the prepared area and secure it with ground anchors.
  3. Overlap: Ensure that the fleece strips overlap by about ten centimeters and also secure them with ground anchors.
  4. Stone edges: If you are planning a border made of stones, also lay the fleece underneath them.
  5. Existing plants: Cut the fleece around the stems or plants.
  6. Planting holes: Cut cross-shaped slits into the fleece for new plants and plant them.
  7. Mulching: Cover the fleece with a layer of mulch 5 to 7 cm thick.
